SwapChess is a free chess variant operated by Hayden Warfield. By using the site you agree to the terms below. They are short because the site is small: there is nothing to buy, nothing to sign up for, and nothing of yours being stored.
1. Use of the site
You may play SwapChess for personal, non-commercial use, free of charge, with no account. In return, please do not:
- attempt to disrupt, overload or gain unauthorised access to the service or its server;
- use automated systems to create rooms or generate traffic at a volume that degrades the service for others;
- enter a display name that is abusive, obscene, impersonates someone else, or is otherwise unlawful — it is shown to your opponent;
- interfere with how advertisements are served, or click advertisements artificially or encourage others to do so.
2. No accounts, no saved games
Games run in the server's memory and are not saved. A game ends when a player leaves, resigns, the position is decided, or the server restarts. No result, rating or history is preserved, and none can be recovered. Do not rely on the service to keep anything for you.
3. Availability
The service is provided on a best-effort basis and may be unavailable, interrupted or discontinued at any time without notice. Games in progress may be lost when this happens.
4. Advertising
The site is funded by advertising served through Google AdSense on its written pages. Advertisements are supplied by third parties, and their content, the products they promote and the sites they link to are not endorsed, verified or controlled by SwapChess. Any dealing you have with an advertiser is between you and them. How advertising cookies are used is set out in the privacy policy.
5. Intellectual property
The written content of this site — the rules explanations, the strategy article and the site text — is © 2026 Hayden Warfield. The name "SwapChess", the design and the logo belong to the operator. You are welcome to describe or discuss the SwapMove rule anywhere you like; game rules themselves are not something anyone owns.
The site is built with open-source components, including python-chess and, where available, the Stockfish engine. Those remain subject to their own licences. Piece graphics are the standard Cburnett chess set supplied by python-chess, used under its licence terms.
6. Disclaimer and liability
The site is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose or uninterrupted operation. To the fullest extent permitted by law, the operator is not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential loss arising from your use of the site, including lost games. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
7. Changes
These terms may be updated; the date at the top of this page will change when they are. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the revised terms.
